Average Salary for Veterinarians

The salary of a veterinarian can vary based on several factors, including location, experience, and specialization. Here is an overview of salary averages: 

Veterinary Practice Location

Veterinarian salaries can vary significantly depending on the region. In metropolitan areas or regions with a higher cost of living, veterinarians tend to earn higher salaries. On the other hand, rural areas may offer slightly lower salaries.

Veterinarian’s Experience

Veterinarians with more years of experience often command higher salaries. As they gain expertise and reputation in their field, their earning potential increases.

Veterinarian’s Specialization

Veterinarians who choose to specialize in areas such as surgery, radiology, or internal medicine can earn higher salaries than those in general practice. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, There are 78,000 veterinarians across the county, with a Mean Annual wage of $129K.   The newest veterinarians in the field make around $62K/yr and the most seasoned veterinarians living in areas with high cost of living make around $174K.

  • Hawaii veterinarians make an average of $155K ($100K-$200K based on years of experience & licenses)
  • Wisconsin veterinarians make an average of $148K ($93K-$190K based on years of experience & licenses)
  • Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, California, and Arizona NY and CA veterinarians make an average of $137K ($80K-$180K depending on experience)
  • Montana and Nebraska veterinarians make an average of $87K ($60K-$120K based on years of experience & licenses)
