This lecture will cover essential aspects of common urologic surgery in veterinary medicine, focusing on the diagnosis and management of urethral obstructions and uroliths. Topics will include surgical versus medical treatments, urinary catheter placement, and preoperative patient management. Key surgical procedures such as cystotomy, urinary diversion, and urethrostomy will be discussed, alongside strategies for effective postoperative care and management of potential complications.

- Accurately diagnose a urethral obstruction
- Discuss the risks and benefits of managing uroliths surgically vs medically
- Talk through the surgical steps of a cystotomy and urethrostomy

Speaker: Dominick Valenzano
Dominick Valenzano DVM, DACVS is a small animal surgeon. He obtained a bioengineering degree from the University of Maryland before attending veterinary school at Cornell University. He became a board-certified surgeon in 2020 after completing a residency at Cornell University. He has a special interest in cardiothoracic surgery, orthopedics, and minimally invasive surgery.
