This lecture provides a comprehensive overview of CPR and the updated 2024 RECOVER Guidelines. CPR training should be updated and practiced frequently to achieve the best possible outcome in cases of true arrest. This lecture will cover the recognition of arrest in veterinary patients, basic and advanced life support techniques, and post-arrest care by providing an overview of the RECOVER guidelines to empower the team to calmly and confidently take informed action when it’s needed most.

Following this lecture, you should be able to:
- Recognize the signs of cardiac and/or respiratory arrest in dogs and cats
- Understand the components of both basic and advanced CPR
- Understand the roles of each team member in an arrest situation
- Recognize the return of spontaneous circulation is generally the beginning of a long road to (possible) recovery
- Set appropriate expectations for pet owners and team regarding the pet’s prognosis

Dr. Beer is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency Critical Care. She obtained her veterinary degree from Michigan State University and completed her internship and residency at University of Pennsylvania. Following her residency in small animal emergency and critical care medicine, Dr. Beer worked in academia for several years as a lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania and as an assistant professor at Michigan State University. Dr. Beer has been published in the JAVMA and JVECC, and has made numerous research and textbook contributions. She is also actively involved in VetGirl.
